On Valentine’s Day, 1982 we began the research project about successful marriage that led to the recent publication of our new book entitled, Golden Anniversaries: The Seven Secrets of Successful Marriage. A Lifetime of Valentine’s Days
On February 14, 1977 Charley passed the final oral examination over his doctoral dissertation. Dr. Charles D. Schmitz came into being that day. And three years later, Liz passed her final oral examination over her dissertation on Valentine’s Day as well, and another Dr. Schmitz was born! Dr. and Dr. Schmitz – “the marriage doctors.”
On this Valentine’s Day 2008 we thank all of you for your support,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for your encouragement, and for your love. You have enriched our lives in so many ways. We are glad to celebrate our labor of love with you. We hope you will celebrate your Golden Anniversaries together like we have.
We remember February 14,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1966 so well. Charley proposed to Liz and then we went dancing until the wee hours of the morning to the sounds of Count Basie. It was so much fun to discover love and to be in love. The Count sealed the deal with his “hold on tight to the one you love” music! What a night! What four decades of love it has been. And if you haven’t grooved to the sounds of the Count, you should do it today! His albums are everywhere and easy to purchase. He was the conductor of the quintessential American jazz orchestra. Getting his autograph that night was wonderful! In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we still remember to this day his words after he did so – “Hey, man, can I borrow this pen to sign autographs for other’s? “Of course, “Charley said. The Count passed on but the memories of him lives on every Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is always a good day to reflect on a lifetime of love. In our case, our love affair with each other has lasted some 42 years. Can you imagine – over four decades of Valentine’s Days with one person! And we can tell you this – we have interviewed many couples over the years whose marriage longevity has surpassed ours,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dwarfed us – often extending into over six decades of life together.

Too many sugary drinks, instead of water give rise to diabetes, because the lack of movement activity. It prevents conversion of the sugar to glucose for feeding the muscle tissues; instead it becomes stored instead of being used in activity. Sitting can be a much more dynamic position; if you learn to sit on your pelvic bones, rather than leaning back on the backrest of the chair.
These are not major movements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but balance changing movements that encourage active mobility inside of your body for generating the internal organs to take supplementary action.
Prolonged sitting will soon become a negative medical term in the medical dictionary, because of the long term negative effects that it has on our overall body. We need to think about ways to counteract sedentary sitting and change it into a position of movement, which is easy if you learn how to sit “ergonomically”.

Ergonomic sitting has been explained as a way of preserving the safety of your spine, while encouraging active movement. This position encourages more active movement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because your feet and arms are free to move; any movement in any of your limbs will impact on the position of your spine, creating the much needed activity that your body desires.
Imagine your body is like a sapling tree in the wind. The spine is strong and will not fall apart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but can be moved around by leaning on one side or the other and the only effect it will have is to shift the weight off one pelvis or the other. This is important to do for providing oxygen to the tissues where the blood is compressed out of the area and needs more oxygen to replenish the area.
The reason for this claim is quite simply that are bodies are not designed for inactivity. Our bodies are designed for the complex physical activity of moving our whole body; and that creates physical activity in our muscles and throughout the internal mechanism of our body,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
When we are just passively sitting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doing minimal physical activity; our whole body just slows right down. The body becomes sedentary, losing all its internal physical activity that is involved with physical movement. To do this you do not want to sit in the central part of the chair and only lean back until you feel your body weight running vertically down your spine to your pelvic bones. The balance of your body weight is now on your pelvic area. It means that you can move your legs quite easily.
I call this position ‘ergonomic sitting’, because you are in a position of movement with your arms and legs. Think of riding a bicycle; where you are sitting on your pelvic bones for cycling. In this position you can use your hands on the computer and do not require a back for your sitting position.
It does not have to be like this!
If you watched CTV last week in Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will have seen that the government is warning workers that prolonged sitting is no longer good for your overall health. It is an area that I have been discussing in relation to your skeletal health, but now the government is warning workers in situations such as call centers and workers on computers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that many medical conditions are negatively related to the inactivity caused by prolonged sitting.
Our lack of muscular movement means that our metabolism slows down, which has a knock-on effect to our digestion, our heart and blood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our glands, kidneys liver etc. It basically slows everything down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that we learn to remain continually sluggish in all our systemic organs.

Tasks that can be accomplished in five minutes or less can be as rewarding as major long-term tasks, especially in that moment of confusion and bewilderment.
Be mindful when your attention is not in the moment. When your mind dwells in the future or the past, you can do nothing. Remember, the only time you can ever do anything is right now.
... this is a lie! This kind of Toxic Shame are always full of lies, distortions, and total untruths. Both of these attitudes need to be addressed head-on in recovery.
From this day forward, commit yourself to a policy of absolute honesty and truth. In every step on this path of growth- be vigorously honest with yourself and others who are present to help and support your journey.
We accept all feelings with awareness that they are a necessary part of our humanness, and that uncomfortable or painful feelings will not make you die. You can survive with all your feelings, and you need to keep aware that the bad feelings won‘t last.
If you want to break free and start living the life you deserve, trust in the truth—even if it doesn‘t feel good. Once you learn to face the truth - you will find it difficult to go back to the lies. The truth will set you free. So it‘s time to show up for you, your life, and meaningful and healthy relationships you deserve.
We therefore used our other people in our addiction to avoid our feelings--to cover up and minimize them at all costs. In recovery, you learn to let your feelings in and accept them for what they are-- with no shame.
Accepting and honoring your feelings is part of nurturing self; part of honoring your humanness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; part of validating self.
2- Face it: YOU and ONLY YOU- Are Responsible For Making Change Happen In Your Life
Understanding your problem in love addiction means you are reading books about love addiction—it means to be familiar with addiction and its relation to love addiction; to understand the relational dynamics of love addiction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the relational patterns and cycles, -- the behavioral and emotional characteristics of love addicts, their avoidant partners, and other important aspects.

In love addiction, like all other kinds of addicts, you have been in denial- and recovery is impossible with denial. And your truth and reality is absolutely necessary if positive change is to be made.
You have to learn the art of accepting failure and missteps while still pushing forward to the next milestone.
Being honest with confronting your denial is part of loving yourself. In recovery, a large part of it is learning how to love you- with freedom and authenticity.
One of the hallmarks of addiction is addicts often attempt to hold someone or something other than themselves responsible for discomfort and pain, or whatever undesirable situation we‘re in.

There is no room in recovery for ―buying into feelings of guilt and shame, as they perpetuate the shame/guilt spiral that often feeds our very dependency and addiction. Guilt is when we feel we've done something bad.
8- Embrace Truth and Honesty
So take your recovery path One Day at a Time. Today is all you have- it‘s all we all have.
If necessary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], focus on one hour or even one minute at a time. If you become overwhelmed with recovery tasks to be accomplished, make yourself a list of things to do. Keep them small and simple. Take a break if needed.
We are talking about establishing honesty as a proactive guide to living your life, rather than as a reactive decision.
In being honest in every aspect of your recovery process— you become capable of taking an honest look at yourself, your life, and your relationships; no to mention your flaws—and your strengths (we all have both strengths and weaknesses).
Recovering from love addiction is not a simple process. It will take hard work and persistence on your part. Change is never easy for any one. This is the reality of it all.
7- Acknowledge – Then Validate ALL of Your Feelings/Emotions
Recovery is NOT about them-- unless they are in a relationship and involved in a recovery program with you. Early on- this is very difficult to comprehend- but try as best you can today.
Change will only come with you. Change comes by your choices and what you focus on a day to day basis.
Change is to a human life what the metamorphosis is to the caterpillar. It is the inevitable cycle of life. If there is no change, there is no life. Change will happen—the kind of change that will happen depends on what you focus on.
In early recovery love addicts easily blame our partner or ex partners-- always distracting or avoiding the self- we obsessively think about what they did, didn‘t do; said, or didn‘t say for the situation we‘re in.
Inevitably, blaming will only halt any chance of growth and recovery.
Feelings are NOT always facts.
Expect that you will feel pain and discomfort as you would by having surgery and recovering in a hospital. Even with pain you are healing—and know it won‘t last forever if you stick with recovery.
4- Expect discomfort
Shame is when we feel that we are bad, inadequate, somehow shouldn’t be on this earth. The shame is at full force in our addiction to love. When we make mistakes or slip for whatever reason, the shame wants you to believe that it‘s not worth it, you‘ll never make it, and things will never change...
Progress may be happening when you don‘t even realize it.
After a long pattern of unhealthy dependency patterns, individuals in recovery will feel worse in the first stages of recovery, even as he or she begins to get better.
Human beings have an innate capacity to change even the most difficult conditions.
The behavioral and emotional patterns of love addiction are emotionally ingrained --- you can‘t will it away, or wish it away, but you do have a great capacity to change. Healthy change is possible for every human being regardless of age and circumstance.
One of the most important aspects of living a healthy life is your ability to share your true self with the world around you. This is engaging in intimacy. And in recovery, we need to learn what intimacy truly is and how it enhances our lives.
Still, with perseverance, willingness and desire for change—will come more hope, strength, empowerment that could change your life in extremely positive ways.
5- One Day at a Time
...Progress – Not Perfection
There is a wise saying in recovery and one you should remember-- ―one day at a time.‖
It‘s too easy to want immediate results and skip the important work needed to recover-- which only fuels frustration and relapse. It‘s easy to look into the future and become overwhelmed and think ―how is it possible?

1- Understand the Dynamics of Love Addiction & Intricacies of Love Addicted Relationships
You must be fully aware that in recovery you will take two steps back and one step forward. In fact in life-- when we humans are striving for something positive goal—the path is always full of ups and downs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But with persistence the goal is achieved.
Feelings are feelings- they are neither good nor bad- wrong or right. To be healthy we learn we have the right to our feelings—whether it is sadness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], joy, passion, grief, frustration, etc. Feelings are part of our human experience. To heal we learn to acknowledge and accept whatever feelings we have.
We often believe ―I shouldn‘t feel this way or that way. We shame ourselves if we feel discomfort.
We developed unhealthy distorted beliefs about our emotions. We came to accept the lie that our real feelings were not acceptable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
3- Realize this reality: You have the capacity to change.
Today, as an adult at this moment, you have the capacity for amazing change; healing and recovery.
Success builds upon success. Sometimes inner changes come from outer changes, and sometimes outer changes are a by-product of inner changes.
One more very important point regarding feelings:
As I mentioned,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], breaking love addiction and related addictive relationship patterns at its core- isn‘t easy. Change is a sometimes a seemingly slow process.
So when you have the feelings of unworthiness, un-lovability, not being good enough; feeling that you will never get through this, that you cannot change, etc. — don‘t accept the feeling as a reality. You just validate its presence. You‘ll understand this much more as you are fully into your recovering.
Accept where you‘re at right now. Accept your feelings. And take appropriate action to take care of you.
Choosing absolute honesty is not a task that can be assigned to you. It is a value to adopt on your own for no other reason than it exemplifies the life you are striving to build-- about a CONCEPT of absolute honesty as a foundation for how you live your life.
This is partly is because when recovery begins there often is a withdrawal because we grieve our fantasies; we go into withdrawal from old patterns of thinking and behaving, all of which must change in order for her to get well.
The possibility of genuine positive change is in your hands all depending on what direction you want to go- then choices and actions you choose in your life from this point forward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Some unfortunate people suffer from depression all their lives. There may be a sneaking suspicion it’s their fault in some way, which is not true. Lifelong (chronic) depression is an illness that can be as debilitating as heart disease, and if untreated can even be fatal. Chronic depression is caused by one or a combination of the following:

Physical

Subliminal technology has been around since the 1950s. Subliminals are more effective than affirmations because the subconscious mind is your mind's power and control center and accepts suggestions with less judgment than your conscious mind. Also, phobias can be difficult to overcome since fears and defenses are housed in your subconscious mind; consciously you realize that flying is relatively safe, for example, but your subconscious mind still fearfully reacts when you step onto an airplane. This is why targeting your subconscious to alleviate fears is effective.
It’s great that some mental health professionals are endorsing and promoting subliminals, hypnosis, and past life regression,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but credit really should be given where credit is due.
3) If you sleep soundly you will be able to listen to noiseless subliminals all night long. A number of light sleepers have found they don’t sleep as well. Everyone is different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so experiment.
